Ask for the job, really!

Once you make it to a job interview, you better ask for the job. Compare this to a political campaign or fund raising with the mission of getting hired. As the interview is winding up, the paper shuffling time, you might even ask interviewers, “Do you have any more questions about my resume or about my career?”

Ask for the job
This is your place to strike. You want to let it be known you want this job. How do you ask for the job? Maybe something like this: “After learning more about your company, my talents would be a great fit for it. I look forward to the opportunity to put them to work for you.”

I actually have said something like the following at a job interview: “I have many talents your company needs. I want to transfer my talents here.” You might even say, “I have _______ (fill in with your specific skill) your company needs. What is the next step in the interview process?” The straightforward statement might be, “I want this job. I have the skills your company needs.”

Ask for business cards
It’s normal to ask for business cards, so do this at the interview. There might be a committee interviewing you; try to get a card from all those involved, but make sure you know who will be making the final decision and offer. Make sure you engage with all the interviewers.

Thank-you e-mail or letter
The job might be decided on two great applicants, but the person sending the letter might have the edge. The body of the letter should have the following: Thank the interviewer for taking time to meet with you. Next, point out something you learned during your visit and want to learn more about. Follow this by stating your interest in the position, noting the specific skills you offer. Lastly, state you are glad to be considered for the opening and await a decision. Send the letter the same day of the interview and have a draft ready before the interview.

Phone call
If you have not heard from the company after the time they indicated, it’s time to take action. Call and find out your status and express your interest in the job. One newspaper I worked at in Nebraska I called once a week for a few months after the time they noted a decision would be made. It paid off, but this could backfire.

If you encounter someone on the phone who says they are uncomfortable talking to you about your status, chances are you do not want to work there, as they did not bother to inform you with any communication. (Yes, I encountered this situation, but learned even more about how the company handled their business relationships.)

If you miss out on a job you really want, try to find out what could make you a stronger candidate. A sign of a good organization is one that is respectful in turning down a candidate, but makes the interview process a positive experience. Keep these companies in your list to contact in the future.

Lesson in interviewing
Sometimes a job interview is nothing more than a learning experience to know what you do not want in a job. It is also a great opportunity to practice your interviewing skills and learn how to further sharpen your resume.

Recent Grad Tips: Facebook, face time needed

Congratulations if you just graduated from college!

When I graduated from college, I took my portfolio and resume on the road and landed a job at a small daily newspaper in Nebraska. Facebook was not around, but I made opportunities for face time with potential employers.

I have compiled a few ideas for recent graduates looking for work, but these will also work for anyone looking for work. Time to start looking for a job is now!

 Networking: Personal connections
Enlist friends and family in your job search, but it is also a great resource of information. It’s important to tell people you are looking for a job. You can tell them in person, by e-mail, at social events and other gatherings, including the local coffee shop. (I would target a local coffee shop at about the same time each day when I noticed community leaders would get their morning fix when I was recently searching for work — and everyone wanted to talk to me!)

Networking is like tossing out a fishing net and waiting to see if you catch a fish, but trying to catch a job with your net needs to be a precise toss. Ask your contacts if they can suggest someone you might connect in your job search.

 Appear in person, make face time
Many jobs require you to apply online, but some jobs you can apply for in person. If there is an option, then appear in person dressed professionally. The person you give the application to could be the business owner or an executive, so be on full alert status!

If you can’t appear in person, do a short video, no more than two minutes and include the link in your e-mail, online application, blog or website. You need to look professional and have a very precise message to deliver to prospective em-ployers.

Temporary position for foot in door
Do research and target companies you want to work for and see if there are any temporary jobs. This is a chance to gain entry into a dream job.Once you are inside the company, start networking your way to the next position. Ask specific questions on training and education required for the dream job. 

Unpaid internship combined with paid temporary job
Consider an unpaid internship or volunteer position at a company of interest. Try to take on a temporary job to help pay bills. Job experience and volunteering are great ways to add experience to your resume in a tight economy.

 Online social networking
If you use Twitter, Facebook, Blogger or other online social networking, you need to keep it as professional as possible as you certainly will be “Googled” on google.com. Do a search with your name now to see what you have posted or others have posted. You can do searches on Twitter and other social media by using key words for your career field.

Searching for work or quit?

Looking for a job takes longer. The longer you search for work, chances will decrease for finding a job.

This sounds like a real downer if you are like many that are searching for work, but it is our nation’s reality in the current job market, according to U.S Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2011 publication. Click here to read the full report.

The amount of time to search for work increased sharply during and after the recession. The median number of weeks of being unemployed is doubled, from five to ten weeks, but the majority of job seekers will spend more than a year searching for a job.

Also, the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that once you are unemployed, the chances of finding success searching for work decreases as the length of time spent searching for work increases.

Can recession college grads find jobs?

If you just graduated from college and have a job lined up after you receive your diploma, consider yourself lucky.

According to Adecco, a staffing firm in the United States, only 57 percent of recent college graduates are working full time. Click here to read full 2011 College Graduate Survey. The survey of college grades notes that it took the 2008 grads the longest to find jobs, about 9.2 months, compared to other recent grades.

The 2011 College Graduate Survey from Adecco suggests that over half, about 55 percent, of recent college graduates have only applied for five full-time jobs since graduation.
About a third of recent college grades are unemployed and have applied to more than five full time jobs.

Like many college graduates, about 33 percent of all recent graduates live at home with their parents, and 17 percent are dependent on their parents financially.

What’s the jobs forecast in 2011?

Are you trying to figure out a new career path as you just can’t find a job, part time or full time, in your field in Minnesota?

You might think about where jobs are expected to be in the near future. That might just mean retraining or education to get you to your goal and employed.

An economic consulting firm called Moody’s Analytics, has forecasted U.S. job growth by geographic region and by industry. Take a look at where the jobs are and are not expected to grow this year. Read the full story on usatoday.com.

Talking animal video must see!

I just watched a funny video you must see if you love animals, especially talking dogs.

My dog does not talk in English, but I can understand when he wants food or a walk. See my dog in action.

Federal Student Aid – College.gov

Thinking about going to college and need money?

If you are a student or a parent trying to find money to pay for college, then direct your fingers to college.gov.

This site will help explain why to go to college, what you need to do, and how to pay for college. If you are not already familiar with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA, then click here to learn more. Colleges you are interested in attending should also be able to direct you to help. Someone at your high school should be able to help you learn how to get to college!

Underemployed? Resources for jobseekers

Looking for a job? Underemployed? Need career change?

I just found a list of resources from the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics that might be of interest.

You will find a handbook of the occupational outlook to help you determine what jobs are in demand in your job market, wages and more. Learn more. . .

If you are underemployed, meaning you are not working full time but need to survive finically, you might want to take a look at the resource page. In the United States, 8.6 million people are working. Read the full report from as of May 6, 2011 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons
(sometimes referred to as involuntary part-time workers) was little
changed over the month, at 8.6 million. These individuals were working
part time because their hours had been cut back or because they were
unable to find a full-time job.

Working part time is not a bad position to be in as many employers hire full time when the economy has an uptick and is showing growth. The unemployment rate for the United States is 9.0 percent for the month of April 2011. Unemployment is always measured for them just completed, not the current month.

What to do if part time job does not become full time?

1. Education – If your part time job is not becoming a full time job, it might be time for retraining. Look at what education and training is available in your area and where there are jobs.
2. Exercise – Looking for work is hard work, but you still need to keep yourself healthy as possible.
3. Stay positive – If you have received rejection letters, keep them. Call up the person that sent it to you and ask how you might improve your changes of getting a job. If there was no letter of rejection, you can always call. Many employers are not sending rejection letters, email or phone calls. These companies should be noted for their lack of professionalism, especially if you had an interview in person. A quick email or standard letter of rejection is not too much to ask for. Hint: If you are interviewed, ask what is the next step in the hiring process. You might even say, “Then I look forward to hearing from you.” Follow up with a thank you letter or email.
