Minnesota’s job bank “laid off”

In Blogging, Career Coach, Job, Money, Workforce on June 29, 2011 at 9:27 am

By Jannet Walsh
Murdock, Minnesota

If you live in Minnesota and want to use the official State of Minnesota job bank called Minnesotaworks.net, it is “laid off” or not working, unfortunately like many of our state employees. You will find a green screen that says, “This website has been closed for the duration of the state government shutdown.”

I suggest you search for jobs or your next employee at JobsHQ.

Maze or labyrinth out of underemployment?

In Family, Job, layoff, Money, Workforce on June 20, 2011 at 10:55 am

By Jannet Walsh
Murdock, Minnesota

A maze has an entrance, but it is difficult to find the way out. A labyrinth has an entrance and way out, but you have to determine the path. Do you have a plan out of underemployment?

How to measure underemployment
The United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics does not have a way of determining statistics for underemployment, meaning a worker is working part time or earning less than is needed for survival.

Here is the what the Department of Labor has to say, “Because of the difficulty of developing an objective set of criteria which could be readily used in a monthly household survey, no official government statistics are available on the total number of persons who might be viewed as underemployed. Even if many or most could be identified, it would still be difficult to quantify the loss to the economy of such underemployment.” Read more. . .

If the federal government can’t determine a way to measure underemployment, you just might be able to do that yourself. It’s simple, you need full-time work, but only can find part-time work, not hard to figure out.

Get health provider, public or private – If you don’t have health insurance provided by employer, don’t panic yet. You will need to solve this by buying your own health insurance. Check out what the local public health department in your county or area offers if you can’t afford insurance, as you can apply for assistance. You will find peace of mind as worrying about health insurance will not help in your job search.

Trying hard to find a job in an area where there are few full-time jobs in your career area is not easy and might be easier to climb the side of a mountain. If you are doing a job normally done by some one out of school, but you have years of experience in your field, just be thankful for your job, but make a path to a better job or position.

Figure out a way to promote yourself. Make a website or blog to let your future employer know you are searching for work. Here is my updated website with resume.

Education is a great path out of a situation of underemployment or unemployment, meaning you have no job. Start looking for education or training that will help you secure employment.

Start searching today for jobs are in demand, and start building a labyrinth out of underemployment.

My late father, Martin J. Walsh Jr., December 7, 1924 to December 6, 2008, stands next to a Great Northern Railway caboose, circa 1940s. Dad was employed by Great Northern and Burlington Northern Railway from 1943 to December 31, 1984. He spent his years as a station agent and telegraph agent in many towns in Minnesota, including my home town of Litchfield. (Note the shadow to the right, most likely the photographer.)

Sending my love,
Your daughter Jannet
